Previously: William Slade is a Slayer hired by High King Hastell to rescue the famed commander, Devbeck Hestron. William has infiltrated a fortress of the Shadow Spawn Zazek. He has killed multiple Shadow Snakes and even a Hearth. Now, he enters a new room, but he may not be prepared for what lies beyond.
William Slade caught his breath as he stepped into the room. What lay in front of him was purely...impossible. Just impossible. No other word could be better used to describe it.
Nothing. The room was an entire dark space. William seemed to float on air, though he knew he stood on some sort of surface. Darkness covered everything and seemed to extend in all directions without end. William looked around, trying to glimpse anything else besides the surrounding darkness. He could not spot a thing.
Suddenly, there came a distant dot of light. It was so small that the Slayer wondered if he imagined it at first. But it began to grow bigger, and he knew that it was for real. The light was growing bigger and drawing closer, and William was mesmerized by its beauty.
As the light came nearer, William was able to see a figure wrapped in its golden wonder. A girl, younger that him, floated within the light, here eyes closed, as if she were in a comatose state. She wore a dress of shadow and had long, black hair, the only dark thing within the light.
Her lips opened, though her eyes didn't, and she spoke to the Slayer. "Welcome, William Slade. You have risked your life to enter this fortress of evil. I suggest that you turn back, so that your life may be spared."
"If you hadn't noticed," William grunted. "There's no doors for me to leave through. There's nothing in this foul room besides you, me, and the shadows. How do you expect for me to leave?"
The girl didn't speak, but extended her hand. Before William a shimmering door of light appeared. It hung in the middle of the room. The Slayer could have reached out and touched it.
"This can be your gateway home, if you so desire," the girl spoke again. "it will take back to the time and place you were before the Shadow Spawn even existed. I will alter your mind so that you will never become a Slayer, so that you will never be thrust into your long years of training and fighting. You won't ever have to fight evil in the Wars, you will never see you friends perish before the Shadow's hand, you won't even have to ever raise a sword. I offer you a chance to have a normal life...forever."
William's eyes were drawn to the door, the portal that would lead him home, a gateway of desired freedom. But, he did have a quest to complete. He did have to find and release Commander Devbeck. And he had sworn to let nothing stand in his way...not even home.
Drawing his blade, the Slayer swung it through the door. The gateway shimmered and faded ina shower of gold, dissipating into the darkness of the room.
A snarl curled over the lips of the girl, the light surrounding her flickering momentarily. Then, it faded altogether. The girl's eyes shot open, and William found himself staring into two dark pupils of scarlet. An unearthly scream came from the child's lips as her hair dissolved, and her nails extended into claws. Horns on top of her now-bald head appeared, growing long and sharp. Her body contorted and grew until she towered over William. She opened her mouth, displaying rows of razor blade-like teeth.
The monster laughed. "PUNY FOOL!" it bellowed, sending spit all over the Slayer. "YOUR TINY BALDE IS BUT A PIN TO THE MIGHT OF MARAGOTH THE MURDERER! I, WHO HAVE KILLED THOUSANDS OF DRAGONS AND TROLLS, SHALL NEVER FALL TO SUCH A SMALL, PATHETIC WEAKLING AS YOURSELF!"
William smirked. Obviously, this Maragoth had no idea that he had fought creatures like it before. They were called "Grondheim", giants that had nearly wiped out by Slayers such as himself. Although, he never knew they could shape-shift and grow as big as Maragoth had. He had a fight upon his hands. But he wasn't worried. William Slade had itching for a battle like this for a long, long time.
