In the early 1960's, comic greats Stan "The Man" Lee and Jack "King" Kirby created merry Marvel's first and finest hero team of mutants: The X-Men. Called so because each of them had an eXtra power (And because the leader of them was Charles Xavier), all members where mutants, people who are born with some sort of difference. In the X-Men's case, it was super-powers. A few years later, the comic was canceled. The sales just weren't working well. It wasn't that popular. Yet, in the mid 70's, writer Chris Claremont and artist Dave Cockrum brought them back onto the super-hero playing field, this time with brand new members. Here's some information you may want to know about everyone's favorite mutant heroes:
Professor X (Charles Xavier): Has telepathic abilities.
Cyclops (Scott Summers): Can fire optic blasts from his eyes.
Marvel Girl (Jean Grey, later Jean Summers): Has telepathic abilities.
Iceman (Robert "Bobby" Brake): Can coat himself in ice and craft ice into weapons.
The Beast (Hank Mc Coy): Overly large hands and feet allow excellent agility and climbing skills. Also uses an extensive lexis.
The Angel (Warren Worthington III): Wings that enable flight.
Magneto (Eric Lensherr): Can manipulate magnetic objects.
The Blob (Fred J. Dukes): Large body mass makes him invulnerable to many weapons and can stick to a spot at will.
Sentinels (Many units): Robots that can fire a variety of weapons.
The Juggernaut (Cain Marko): Bands of Cyttorac give him inexhaustible strength and invulnerability.
Sauron (Karl Lykos): Energy vampire that can steal other mutant's energies and put others under his will.

X-Men 4-7: The X-Men go up against Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
X-Men 14-16: X-Men battle the Sentinels.

Banshee (Sean Cassidy): Sonic scream that can propel him into flight.
Sunfire (Shiro Yoshida): Can shoot fire and can create heated air currents that allow flight (Leaves after Giant-Size #1).
Thunderbird (John Proudstar): Had super strength (Dies two issues after Giant-Size).
Black Tom (Thomas Cassidy): Can project heat blasts and concussive force.
The Shi'ar Guard (Multiple members): Multiple powers.
Hellfire Club (Multiple Members): Multiple Powers.
Sabertooth (Victor Creed): Adamantium claws and skeleton. Healing factor.
Giant-Size X-Men 1: The New X-Men are put together and are sent to rescue the old, who are trapped on the living island known as Krakoa.
Uncanny X-Men 120: The X-Men meet Alpha Flight, Canada's first super-hero team.
Uncanny X-Men 129-137: Jean Grey, who has recently become the powerful entity known as Phoenix phases into her eviler persona, Dark Phoenix.
Uncanny X-Men 141-142: The Sentinels take over all of North America.
Over the years, the X-Men have gotten to be more popular. This is probably due to the work of Claremont and Cockrum, but many writers and artists have contributed their efforts to the process. Which team do you like better? I'm not really sure myself, but who cares? As long as there is a Marvel, there will always be... the X-Men.
